Seeing and believing: 3D TV realities

As sets go on sale today for the first time in the UK, is 3D television the future? Not apparently if you own a set with a screen size less than 40 inches.

Why? Any smaller than this and the 3D effect simply isn't noticed.

3D television programming may be great for communal sports fandom in pubs and clubs shown on large screens, but it will be a big shift in family life for everyone to wear tinted glasses gathered around smaller sets.

Social behaviour around 3D television may change: as ever, the medium is the message.

  1. Interesting blog! 3D TV is brilliant, ive watched in 3D and i have to say i was very impressed and by the year 2013 the whole world is suspected to have one in their household! Do you remember when we all had to switch from square televisions to widescreen and we all said it would never catch on and weve not seen the last of the square screen? Well 3D TV is basically the same. No-one wants to believe that we all will be watching them in the not so distant future yet i can guarantee once youve experienced one youll never want to go back to HD!
If you go to www.3d-tvs.co.uk you'll find all the latest companies with 3D tv's in stock and they even compare the prices for you - Voila! Enjoy!

  2. Thanks for the comment, Whiskymac. Maybe TVs are experiencing their own version of Moore's Law: the complexity of the technology doubling every two years. Perhaps 3D TV will be overtaken by hologram TV in a few years' time, like the valet-butler gizmo in the movie Minority Report. It has been imagined, so someone will make it happen in the real world.
